In 2015, Benchmade Knife Company added a new version of the 162 Bushcrafter knife to its line called the "EOD." The EOD, which stands for "Explosive Ordnance Disposal," was developed after Benchmade got word that members of the US Navy's EOD team in California were using original 162 Bushcrafter knives to cut C4 Plastic Explosives. Apparently, EOD team members appreciated the Bushcrafter's combination of cutting performance, rugged build quality, size, S30V stainless blade, and G10 handles. After Benchmade sat down with some of these Navy Bushcrafter aficionados, they decided to create a new version of the Bushcrafter with a couple of minor changes suggested by the EOD guys. The new EOD Bushcrafter knife has a black kydex sheath, and sand G-10 handles. Everything else about the new EOD Bushcrafter knife remains the same as the standard 162. The 162 Bushcraft Knife is Benchmades first foray into the Bushcraft world. Its a fixed blade knife thats a real workhorse, and a definite positive edition to the community. Bushcraft really requires a different kind of knife, one that can hold up under the constant use and abuse it will face out in the field. Milled from a solid billet of premium CPM S30V Stainless and patterned after Sibert's own custom Cascadia Bushcrafter Knife, the 162 is simply gorgeous. The Bushcrafter features sturdy full tang construction, a 4.4" long cutting edge, and a blade style that Benchmade calls a "high-ground drop point blade." CPM-S30V is an American-made and developed premium grade stainless steel created especially for knives. It is a powder-made steel with a uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties. As a blade material, it offers excellent corrosion resistance and superb edge qualities. Although the Bushcrafter doesn't have a scandi grind like most bushcraft knives, Sibert worked directly with Benchmade's engineering team to ensure that the edge was suitably thin before the sharpening process, then added a secondary bevel to it. This results in an edge that, according to Sibert, "increases edge strength over a scandi grind, while still being super sharp." The handle scales are molded G-10, and are held in place with flared titanium tubing. According to Sibert, the flared tubing helps to squeeze the handle against the tang, preventing separation during laterally applied force. These hollow tubes also provide excellent lashing points to turn the Bushcrafter into a spear, machete, or pruning pole to reach fruits and nuts on high tree branches. The red liners were removed and the color switched from the original Bushcrafter's green to coyote brown. The Bushcrafter, EOD comes with a black Kydex Sheath. The Kydex sheath was a better choice since the EOD was inspired by the US Navy's EOD and they spent all of their time in and around saltwater. Since the EOD guys were using the knife for decidedly "less bushcrafty" tasks, no firesteel loop was required on the sheath. This also serves to lighten the knife's carry weight, important when they have to wear heavy, gargantuan super suits designed to withstand a close perimeter bomb blast!
